Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu Urges Media to Back Tax Reforms

President Bola Tinubu has called on the media to support his administration’s proposed tax reforms, which he believes are crucial for building sustainable national wealth and prosperity for all Nigerians.

Speaking at the 2024 Nigerian Media Merit Awards in Lagos, President Tinubu acknowledged that opinions may differ on the details of the proposed reforms but emphasized that there is a national consensus on the need for a complete overhaul of the current tax administration system.

The President expressed optimism that through ongoing dialogue, there would be areas of convergence on the tax reforms. He highlighted that the tax bills before the National Assembly aim to streamline the number of taxes, ease the burden on vulnerable Nigerians, increase the share of taxes going to the states and foster business growth through targeted incentives.

President Tinubu also emphasized the importance of the media in amplifying the narratives around the reforms for better public understanding and in countering misinformation and guiding Nigerians with accurate and purposeful information.

In a related development, President Tinubu has approved funding for the take-off of the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Institute (MIL) aimed at equipping Nigerians with the skills to differentiate between credible sources and misinformation.
