Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has partnered with the Ministry of Education to integrate digital literacy into the country’s education system.
This initiative, part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aims to equip young Nigerians with critical skills to thrive in the digital economy.
The partnership seeks to embed digital literacy across all levels of education, from kindergarten to tertiary institutions, with a target of achieving 70% digital literacy by 2027 and 95% by 2030.
NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa emphasized the urgency of fostering a digitally literate population, highlighting the potential of digital skills to transform lives and economies.
Key Features of the Initiative: Curriculum Integration: Digital skills will be embedded as a mandatory component across all levels of education, ensuring students are equipped with the necessary skills to navigate the digital world.
Teacher Empowerment: Educators will receive training to effectively deliver digital literacy, enabling them to provide high-quality instruction and support to students.
Infrastructure Development: Deployment of digital tools and resources to ensure hands-on technology exposure for students, bridging the digital divide and promoting equal access to opportunities.
Regional Inclusion: Equal access to digital resources in underserved and rural communities, addressing regional disparities and ensuring no child or teacher is left behind.
The initiative has received support from key stakeholders, including CISCO, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and National Universities Commission (NUC). Their combined expertise and resources will provide a robust framework for implementing the partnership’s goals.
Implementation Roadmap: Short-term Goals: Achieve 70% digital literacy by 2027, with a focus on integrating digital skills into the curriculum and training educators.
Long-term Goals: Achieve 95% digital literacy by 2030, with a focus on sustaining and scaling the initiative, while continuously monitoring and evaluating progress. This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader goal of positioning itself as a continental leader in digital transformation and innovation. With technology increasingly shaping the global economy, Nigeria’s youth stand at the forefront of this revolution, ready to harness the opportunities presented by a digital-first world.
