Party Discipline: PDP NWC Overrules Imo Chapter on Ugochinyere’s Expulsion

Nigeria’s opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has overturned the expulsion of one of its lawmakers, Ikenga Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State in the House of Representatives.

The PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) declared the expulsion null and void, citing inconsistencies with the party’s constitution. The NWC stated that only the National Executive Committee has the authority to discipline a National Assembly member, not the ward or state chapter.

Ugochinyere’s expulsion was announced by the Imo PDP chapter on Friday, citing gross indiscipline, insubordination, and anti-party activities. However, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, emphasized that the expulsion did not follow the proper procedures outlined in the party’s constitution.

The NWC has cautioned that the PDP is a party governed by strict adherence to its constitution and rules and will not allow any individual or group to violate these principles. Ugochinyere remains a member of the PDP, and the NWC has called on all party members in Imo State to remain united and work together in the overall interest of the party
