Human Rights Lawyer Dele Farotimi Remanded in Ekiti Correctional Centre

A Nigerian court has remanded human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi in the Ekiti State correctional centre. Farotimi was arraigned on a 16-count charge of alleged defamation of character, following the publication of his book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’.

The book allegedly accused Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Afe Babalola, of compromising the Supreme Court. Farotimi pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Chief Magistrate, Abayomi Adeosun, adjourned the matter till December 10, 2024, and ordered Farotimi to file a formal application for bail ยน.

The Ekiti State Police Command claimed that Farotimi refused to honour invitations from the command, leading to his arrest in Lagos and subsequent transfer to Ekiti State.

However, Farotimi’s lawyer, Temitope Temokun, disputed this claim, stating that the Ekiti command never invited Farotimi and that the arrest was unlawful
