US President Joe Biden has issued a full and unconditional pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, who was facing sentencing for two criminal cases.
In a statement, President Biden said his son had been “singled out” and called his cases “a miscarriage of justice”.
Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to tax charges in September and was found guilty of being an illegal drug user in possession of a gun in June.
The pardon comes despite President Biden’s previous statements that he would not grant his son clemency.
President-elect Donald Trump has reacted to the pardon, saying it was “an abuse and miscarriage of justice”.
Mr. Trump also referenced his supporters who stormed the US Capitol on 6 January 2021, saying they had been “imprisoned for years”.
The White House had previously stated that President Biden would not pardon his son, with Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre saying in September that the answer was “no”.
However, in a statement on Sunday, President Biden said he had decided to pardon his son due to the “politics” that had “infected this process”.
Hunter Biden said he would “never take the clemency I have been given today for granted” and would devote his life to helping those struggling with addiction.
