Liverpool have strengthened their grip on the Premier League, defeating Manchester City 2-0 at Anfield to extend their lead to nine points. The victory, which leaves City 11 points adrift, marks the champions’ fourth consecutive league defeat and seventh winless match.
From the outset, Liverpool, fresh from their Champions League triumph over Real Madrid, subjected City to a relentless onslaught. Virgil van Dijk’s early header against the post set the tone, with City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, deputizing for the dropped Ederson, forced into constant action.
Mohamed Salah’s visionary pass enabled Cody Gakpo to score a straightforward goal in front of the Kop after 12 minutes, as City struggled to contain Liverpool’s attacking intensity. Van Dijk later headed wide from a gilt-edged opportunity, while Liverpool continued to create chances.
As City hinted at a late recovery, Liverpool sealed their victory with 12 minutes remaining. Substitute Darwin Nunez pressured Ruben Dias into an error, allowing Luis Diaz to capitalize. Diaz was subsequently brought down by Ortega, and Salah converted the resulting penalty with ease, atoning for his midweek miss against Real Madrid.
