Nigeria’s NNPC Ltd Denies Claims of Inactivity at Port Harcourt Refinery

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has dismissed allegations made by a self-proclaimed “community person,” Timothy Mgbere, that the Port Harcourt Refinery is inactive. Mgbere claimed that the recent restreaming of the refinery and truck-out of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) were false.

The NNPC Ltd in a statement by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer Olufemi Soneye described Mgbere’s assertions as a “crass display of ignorance” and clarified that the Old and New Port Harcourt Refineries have been integrated, sharing common utilities and a single terminal for products load-out. This means that storage tanks and loading gantries can receive products from both refineries.

Mgbere also alleged that the refinery was producing 1.4 million barrels per day, which is far beyond its nameplate capacity of 60,000 barrels of oil per day. NNPC Ltd. stated that the refinery is currently producing at 90% throughput, translating to 1.4 million litres of PMS, alongside other products like diesel and kerosene.

The company urged the public to disregard Mgbere’s claims, describing them as “sheer mischief and blatant display of ignorance.” NNPC Ltd. reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, ensuring that accurate information is disseminated to the public
