A ceasefire has been agreed to end 13 months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, US President Joe Biden has announced. The agreement, brokered by the US, is set to come into effect at 04:00 local time on Wednesday.
Under the deal, Israel will gradually withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon over a 60-day period, while Lebanese government forces regain control of the area. Hezbollah fighters and weapons will also be removed from the area south of the Litani River.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that Israel will not hesitate to strike if Hezbollah breaks any part of the agreed deal. The US and France will be involved in monitoring the implementation of the deal.
