No Free Pass for Private Jets, Says Nigeria’s Aviation Minister

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has clarified that private planes, including those owned by prominent individuals like Bishop David Oyedepo, cannot take off or land in the country without obtaining clearance from the relevant authorities.

Mr. Keyamo emphasized that all aircraft, including military planes and drones, must secure approval before entering or exiting the country. He explained that private planes must first land at an international airport, where passengers and crew will undergo processing by Customs, immigration, and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) before proceeding to their destination.

The minister’s statement comes amidst calls from the House of Representatives to revoke airstrip licenses issued to certain individuals and private organizations, citing security concerns. Mr. Keyamo, however, assured that the government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of the country’s airspace.

According to Minister Keyamo, Nigeria currently has over 40 airstrips, in addition to 23 federal airports and eight or nine state airports. The minister stated that all airstrips, including those owned by private individuals, are subject to regulation and oversight by the relevant authorities.
