A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of 109 foreigners, accused of cybercrime, at Kuje and Suleja Correctional Centres. The foreigners, comprising citizens from China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Brazil, Malaysia, and Myanmar, were arrested by the police for allegedly promoting a fraudulent and unregistered gaming platform.
The court’s decision was made after a defence lawyer, James Onoja, requested an adjournment to enable the prosecution to correct the defendants’ names on the charge sheet. The prosecution had requested the defendants’ travel documents to facilitate the correction.
The foreigners face six charges, including cybercrime, money laundering, and unlawfully residing in Nigeria. They were alleged to have committed various offences, including accessing computers and networks to input, alter, or delete data, resulting in inauthentic data.
The case has been adjourned until November 29 for the defendants’ arraignment. The police had earlier arrested 130 foreigners, including Chinese and Malaysians, for alleged cybercrimes
