Gun Battle Erupts in Anambra State, Two Feared Killed

A deadly gun duel broke out between local security operatives and police in Anambra State on Wednesday, leaving two people feared dead and several others injured. The incident occurred at Izuchukwu Junction, Nnobi/Nnewi Road, sending panic waves through the area.

Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene, saying a vehicle caught fire after bullets hit its fuel tank. “The incident happened last night; we just saw security operatives engaging each other in a gun battle, and during the incident, two passers-by were hit by bullets,” one source recounted.

According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, the local security forces mistakenly identified the police operatives as “unfriendly forces” and opened fire, sparking the gun duel.

Ikenga clarified that the attack was not an attempt to disrupt the burial of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. Joint Security Forces have been deployed to maintain calm in Nnewi throughout the burial ceremonies.

In a separate incident, two police officers were reportedly killed and their van set ablaze in Uruagu, Nnewi North Local Government Area. The police have begun a manhunt for the perpetrators
