November 19th marks International Men’s Day (IMD), a global celebration honouring the positive value men bring to the world, their families, and communities. Founded in 1999 by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, IMD serves as an opportunity to address issues affecting men and boys.
Six Key Pillars of IMD:
- Promoting Positive Male Role Models: Highlighting everyday men living decent, honest lives.
- Celebrating Men’s Positive Contributions: Recognizing men’s impact on society, community, family, marriage, childcare, and the environment.
- Focusing on Men’s Health and Wellbeing: Addressing social, emotional, physical, and spiritual health.
- Highlighting Discrimination Against Males: Examining social services, social attitudes, expectations, and law.
- Improving Gender Relations and Promoting Gender Equality: Fostering a safer, better world.
- Creating a Safer, Better World: Enabling people to grow and reach their full potential.
In Nigeria, Sanmi Falobi, Coordinator of International Men’s Day Nigeria, emphasizes the significance of commemorating IMD, aligning with the global theme, “Positive Male Role Models.” This initiative encourages stakeholders to promote values, character, and responsibilities associated with being a man, recognizing male role models, and celebrating men’s contributions.
Mr. Falobi in a statement released on Sunday stresses that IMD provides an opportunity for corporate organizations, government institutions, and NGOs to highlight the positive values of men in their families, communities, and society. By doing so, IMD aims to motivate men to create a safer, better, and more harmonious society.
As the world prepares to celebrate International Men’s Day, Mr. Falobi emphasizes the importance of acknowledging positive male role models and their impact on shaping a better future for all.
