At least 35 people have been killed and dozens more injured after a car ploughed into a crowd of people exercising at a stadium in Zhuhai, southern China.
Local authorities have confirmed that a 62-year-old man, identified as Mr Fan, drove his SUV through a barrier at the Zhuhai Sports Centre on Monday. The incident has been described as a “serious and vicious attack”.
Many of the victims are elderly people, teenagers, and children. The driver was arrested while attempting to flee the scene and is currently in a coma due to self-inflicted injuries.
Chinese authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with initial reports suggesting that Mr Fan was motivated by a dispute over a property settlement.
The attack has sparked widespread concern and condemnation, particularly as China hosts a major international military airshow in the region. The incident has also raised questions about security measures at public venues.
In recent months, China has seen a series of violent attacks, including knife attacks and stabbings. Following Monday’s tragedy, the Japanese embassy in China has advised its citizens to exercise caution and avoid drawing attention to themselves.
