Ondo State Governorship Election: Peace Accord Signed

Nigerian political parties have signed a peace accord ahead of the Ondo State governorship election scheduled for November 16, 2024.

Ondo State is in Southwest Nigeria and is over four hundred and twenty kilometres away from Nigeria’s Capital, Abuja.

The accord aims to promote a violence-free election and uphold democratic tenets.

General Abdulsalam Abubakar, Chairman of the National Peace Committee, urged candidates and parties to reject vote trading and maintain the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the country.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, noted that no security incidents have been reported so far and expressed optimism about continued peace.

Prof. Yakubu revealed INEC has taken measures to address election-day challenges, particularly logistics. The commission plans to deploy over 17,000 ad hoc and regular officials, as well as large quantities of materials, to 4,154 voting and collation locations. Voters can expect improved logistics and result management, he added.

The representative of Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, DIG Sylvester Abiodun said the Nigeria Police Force will deploy 34,657 personnel to secure all 18 local government areas, complemented by 8,500 personnel from other security agencies, totalling 43,157 personnel.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa commended the National Peace Committee’s efforts and pledged to uphold democracy and the peace accord.

This peace accord is a crucial step towards ensuring a peaceful electoral process in Nigeria, building on previous successes in reducing election violence.
