Kogi State to Establish Special Economic Zone

Kogi State Government has initiated processes to establish a special economic zone with free trade zone status in the Ajaokuta economic development corridor. Governor Ahmed Ododo met with Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) Managing Director Olufemi Ogunyemi in Abuja to secure support for the project, conceived over ten years ago.

Key Objectives:

  • Harness Natural Resources: Maximize Kogi State’s strategic location between northern and southern Nigeria, leveraging abundant solid mineral resources, arable land, and quality human resources.
  • Economic Hub: Transform the state into a major economic centre, creating thousands of job opportunities.
  • Public-Private Partnership: Allocate 3,000 hectares of land in Ajaokuta for the project.

Governor Ododo assured prompt action on the state’s part to realize the project. Mr. Ogunyemi pledged NEPZA’s support through timely approval, licensing, and assistance.

This development follows Kogi State’s selection as a Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) by the Federal Government, with the Africa Development Bank (AfDB) and Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security supporting the initiative.
