Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate release of all minors arrested for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests in August. This directive, announced by Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, mandates the Nigeria Police to release the minors without prejudice to ongoing legal processes.
The President has also instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to provide immediate welfare support to the affected minors and ensure their safe reunion with parents or guardians nationwide.
Additionally, an administrative committee will be formed, headed by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, to investigate issues surrounding the arrest, detention, treatment, and release of these minors.
Law enforcement agents involved in the arrests and legal processes will face investigation, and disciplinary action will be taken if any infractions are found.
This decision follows public outcry over the trial of 76 individuals, including 30 minors aged 14-17, charged with treason, destruction of property, and other felonies.
