Nigeria’s Electoral Commission Reaffirms Commitment to Free and Fair Elections in Ondo State

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible governorship election in Ondo State on November 16, 2024. Resident Electoral Commissioner Oluwatoyin Babalola made the pledge at the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room Dialogue Session in Abuja, emphasizing INEC’s awareness of its responsibilities and proactive measures to ensure a hitch-free election .

Election Preparations

Ondo State has over two million registered voters across 18 local government areas, with 61,919 permanent voter cards (PVCs) distributed. INEC is engaging with the media to educate citizens and reduce voter apathy. The Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) will be deployed in all 3,933 polling units, with transportation and security arrangements being finalized.

Stakeholder Support

Yunusa Ya’u, convener of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, highlighted the importance of observer groups in identifying weaknesses and improving future elections. Matthew Ayibakuro from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) encouraged discussions on issues affecting electoral outcomes, such as insecurity and economic hardship, and pledged support for initiatives strengthening INEC and security agencies.

INEC’s Resolve

Babalola assured that polling units will open early, and election officials will wait for voters. INEC has implemented measures to ensure a seamless electoral process, including working ahead of timelines, applying lessons from previous elections, and capacity building for staff and ad-hoc staff
