INEC Rebukes Governor Makinde Over Unfounded Allegations Against Ondo REC

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has swiftly responded to allegations made by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, calling for the removal of Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ondo State, Mrs. Toyin Babalola, citing her supposed origin from Ondo State. However, in a post on its X handle, INEC clarified that Mrs. Babalola is not from Ondo State, adhering to the Commission’s policy of not deploying RECs to their state of origin. This policy aims to ensure impartiality and prevent potential conflicts of interest.

Governor Makinde’s allegations are not isolated, as he previously accused a senior INEC official of colluding with a federal university’s Vice Chancellor to undermine the 2020 Ondo Governorship election. INEC deemed those allegations untrue.

The electoral body has appealed to high-ranking officials like Governor Makinde to verify information before making public accusations, emphasizing the need for accuracy and responsibility in their statements.
