Nigeria’s Electoral Commission to Release Edo Governorship Poll Materials to PDP

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to make electoral materials from the September 21 Edo State governorship election available to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today, following allegations of delay and manipulation.

Augbum Onuoha, Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo State, confirmed the development, stating that the PDP would be granted access to the materials. This comes after the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, accused INEC officials of withholding materials to conceal alleged rigging.

Edo Governorship Election Dispute

  • INEC’s Declaration: APC’s Senator Monday Okpebholo won with 291,667 votes, edging out PDP’s Asue Ighodalo (247,274 votes)
  • PDP’s Allegations: Manipulation and rigging, with plans to challenge the result in court
  • Court Order: INEC directed to allow PDP to inspect electoral materials

The PDP secured a court order to inspect electoral materials but was initially denied access by INEC officials. The Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare, accused INEC of employing delay tactics to obstruct justice and frustrate the PDP’s appeal.

Protests and Reactions

  • PDP Women’s Protest: Demanding the return of the allegedly stolen mandate, clad in black attire and carrying placards
  • Spokesperson Stella Okoro: “We are troubled because of our stolen mandateā€¦ We are not lions and tigers, we voted”

The situation highlights tensions surrounding Nigeria’s electoral process and the need for transparency and accountability.
