Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Abubakar, has praised the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division for their relentless fight against oil theft and other criminal activities in the region. During his visit to the division’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, Abubakar attributed the recent increase in oil production to the success of Operation Delta Safe.
The statement, signed by Henshaw Ogubike, Director (Information and Public Relations), highlighted Abubakar’s emphasis on the collaborative efforts of Operation Delta Safe, the Chief of Defence Staff, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in combating oil theft. He emphasized the need for continued joint efforts to eradicate this menace, stating that Nigerians hope to see oil drive the nation to prosperity.
Progress and Future Goals
Abubakar expressed confidence in defeating oil theft, citing increased oil production as a testament to progress. He assured that production would continue to rise, with a projected significant increase by the end of the year. To achieve this, Abubakar urged Operation Delta Safe to intensify measures in the Niger Delta region.
Task Force’s Commitment
Major-General JH Abdussalam, General Officer Commanding (GOC), briefed Abubakar on the task force’s activities. Abdussalam reported strengthened troop capabilities and robust joint measures to thwart oil thieves and deny freedom to criminal groups like IPOB/ESE.
The task force aims to sustain anti-oil theft operations until the federal government’s target of 2 million barrels per day is achieved by December 2024.
