Fresh explosions and protests have rocked Rivers State, Nigeria, sparking widespread chaos and unrest. The latest developments are linked to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun’s order to unseal the secretariats of 23 local government areas and withdraw police personnel who had occupied the councils since July.
Violence has erupted in several areas, including the Eleme Local Government Area secretariat, which is currently on fire. Buildings and vehicles have been set ablaze following an explosion suspected to be caused by dynamite. In Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, protesters stormed the council headquarters in Omoku, preventing the newly sworn-in chairman from resuming office.
The crisis in Rivers State is not new, with political tensions simmering since 2013. The recent developments are seen as a culmination of the ongoing power struggle between rival factions within the state.
