Federal High Court Bars VIO From Stopping, Impounding Vehicles

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (VIO) cannot stop vehicles, impound or confiscate them, or impose fines on motorists.

Justice Evelyn Maha’s judgment, delivered on October 2, declared that no law empowers the VIO or related authorities to take such actions.

The ruling came after human rights activist Abubakar Marshal filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit. The court issued a perpetual injunction, restraining the VIO and related authorities from violating Nigerians’ rights to freedom of movement, presumption of innocence, and property ownership.

This landmark decision aims to curb alleged abuses of power by traffic authorities and ensure motorists’ rights are protected.
