Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has pledged to reduce electricity costs in the coming months. During a courtesy call with the National Lottery Trust Fund’s Executive Secretary, Tosin Adeyanju, Minister Adelabu noted that electricity costs in Nigeria are lower than running generators on petrol or diesel. He also highlighted that Nigeria’s electricity prices are the cheapest compared to other African countries like Togo, Mali, and Niger Republic.
However, Mr. Adelabu acknowledged that the low income level in Nigeria makes the cost seem high to consumers. Currently, Band A customers receive at least 20 hours of electricity daily and pay N209.5 per kilowatt-hour, which has sparked complaints from citizens and manufacturers.
To address this, the National Lottery Trust Fund plans to train rural youths to assemble solar energy systems as part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. This initiative aims to create employment and reduce youth restiveness. Adelabu expressed his ministry’s readiness to collaborate on this project, utilizing renewable power sources like solar and wind to reach areas beyond the grid.
