Nigeria’s telecommunications giant, Airtel, is embracing solar energy to power its infrastructure, as diesel prices push fuel costs to a staggering ₦28 billion.
Rising diesel costs have forced the company to seek alternative energy sources, with solar power emerging as a cost-effective solution. This shift is part of Airtel’s broader strategy to reduce operational expenses and enhance sustainability amidst Nigeria’s persistent energy challenges.

At a media roundtable in Lagos on Tuesday, Airtel’s Director of Corporate Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility revealed the company’s pivot to renewable energy. Citing records up to May, the director highlighted the urgent need for sustainable solutions.
“Nigeria’s unreliable power supply forces telecom operators to rely heavily on diesel generators,” said Airtel Nigeria’s Chief Technical Officer, Harmanpreet Dhillon. “We’re exploring alternative energy options like solar power to address this challenge.”
Airtel’s move comes as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) grants licenses to enhance connectivity. The company has also appointed new media agencies and secured a five-year tenancy agreement with IHS.
