ECOWAS Speaker Calls for Reforms Amid Regional Crises

The Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament Memounatou Ibrahima has urged the West African regional bloc to undertake speedy reforms to tackle the myriad crises plaguing the region. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Third Extra-Ordinary Session and Second Parliamentary Seminar in Lome, Togo, Ibrahima emphasized the need for budgetary provisions to finance efforts addressing regional challenges.

The region faces numerous issues, including floods, terrorism, violent extremism, and irregular migration, which have severely impacted thousands of citizens. Ibrahima stressed that ECOWAS, approaching its 50th anniversary in 2025, must consolidate democratic principles and good governance to achieve its founding vision.

The Speaker praised Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbe for his unwavering support for regional integration and women’s empowerment, citing her own ascension as the first female ECOWAS Parliament Speaker as a testament to his commitment.

ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development President George Donkor emphasized the need for regional cooperation to boost investments and ensure equitable distribution of benefits. Togolese Minister of Human Rights Pacome Missiame Amenyo Adjourouvi highlighted the importance of human rights protection for regional peace and prosperity.

The call for reforms comes at a critical juncture, particularly following the recent withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the bloc. The region’s future depends on its ability to adapt and address the pressing issues facing its citizens.
