Israeli citizen arrested over alleged Iran-backed assassination plot

Israel’s security services have foiled an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top officials, arresting an Israeli citizen suspected of involvement. The individual, a businessman with ties to Turkey, was twice smuggled into Iran and received payment to carry out missions.

According to reports, the suspect met with a wealthy Iranian businessman, Eddie, and an Iranian security operative in Turkey and Iran. He was tasked with transferring money or guns, photographing crowded places in Israel, and threatening other Israeli citizens recruited by Iran. The investigation revealed that Iranian intelligence agents asked the Israeli to assassinate Netanyahu, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, among others.

This alleged plot is the latest escalation in the long-standing tensions between Iran and Israel. The two nations have been arch-enemies since the 1979 Islamic revolution, with Iran refusing to recognize Israel’s right to exist. The conflict has intensified with the war in Gaza, with both sides engaging in direct and indirect attacks.
