US Opens Doors to Nigerian Students: Over $30M in Scholarships Up for Grabs”

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has urged Nigerian students to take advantage of educational opportunities in the US, highlighting the strong people-to-people ties between the two nations.

Speaking at the 23rd annual Education USA College Fair in Abuja on Tuesday, Ambassador Mills revealed that over 17,600 Nigerian students studied in the US last year, making Nigeria the top African country for US-bound students.

The fair brought together representatives from 50 US colleges and universities, offering Nigerian students a chance to explore academic and scholarship opportunities.

  • Over $30 million in financial aid and scholarships awarded to Nigerian students last year
  • 970+ US institutions welcomed Nigerian students across all 50 states and the District of Columbia
  • Texas remains the most popular US state for Nigerian students
  • 73 students benefited from the Opportunity Funds Program in Abuja and Lagos

Ambassador Mills emphasized the importance of education for Nigeria’s prosperity and stability, stressing that studying in the US fosters cultural exchange, lifelong friendships, and socio-economic progress.

The US Embassy’s Public Diplomacy team and Consular section representatives were on hand to provide guidance on international education and visa processes.

With thousands of Nigerian students already pursuing their academic dreams in the US, this year’s college fair aims to attract even more talented individuals to American institutions.
