UK Invests £1.9 Million in West Africa’s Tech Sector

The UK government has launched the Sankore Project, a £1.9 million initiative aimed at strengthening economic growth through science, technology, and innovation in West Africa, particularly in Nigeria and Ghana.

This project is part of the Africa Technology and Innovation Partnerships (UK-ATIP) Programme.

At a press conference in Accra, UK Minister for Africa, Lord Collins, announced the call for proposals from non-profit organizations, including UN agencies. The Sankore Project will focus on:

  • Facilitating Commercialization: Supporting innovative solutions and improving innovation policy
  • Enhancing Digital Service Delivery: Strengthening government digital services
  • Partnerships: Establishing new partnerships with non-profit organizations in Ghana and Nigeria

Lord Collins emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “This initiative is about strengthening the global technology sector, creating opportunities for rapidly growing economies to compete on the world stage”.

Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, welcomed the project, saying it will enhance Nigeria’s innovation landscape and promote sustainable growth.
