Nigerian Man Sentenced to Death in Indonesia Released

A Nigerian man, Emmanuel Ihejirika, who was sentenced to death for drug trafficking in Indonesia, has been released after several years in prison.

According to a statement by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Ihejirika’s release was secured after his case was taken up pro bono by a Nigerian lawyer based in Washington DC, Emmanuel Isha Ogebe.

NIDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended Ogebe for his selflessness and kindness in taking up the case. She noted that Ihejirika’s case appeared to be one of mistaken identity.

Dabiri-Erewa also praised the efforts of the Nigerian Charge D’Affaires in Indonesia, Ms Patricia Alechenu, for her unwavering support in the case.

The NIDCOM boss reiterated that the penalty for drug trafficking in Indonesia is death and urged Nigerians to stay away from crime.

Ogebe thanked Dabiri-Erewa for her prompt intervention in cases relating to Nigerians in Diaspora and pledged to continue working with her and the NIDCOM team.
