A storey building on Ekhator Street, Benin, Edo State, collapsed during Saturday morning’s downpour, causing panic in the student community at Ekosodin. The area is home to a large number of students from the nearby University of Benin.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Some trapped students have been rescued, while the search for others continued throughout the day. A university rescue team has been working to evacuate those trapped, with several severely injured victims rushed to the hospital.
Ongoing Search for Trapped Victims
One student, who wished to remain anonymous, reported that the rescue team was still searching for at least one victim who remained trapped inside the rubble. The Dean of Student Affairs was coordinating rescue efforts alongside the university team.
Update: Successful Rescue of Trapped Students
The Edo State Government has confirmed that all students trapped in the collapsed building have been successfully rescued, with no fatalities reported. This update was disclosed in a statement on Saturday evening by Mr. Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media Projects.
Investigation Underway
An investigation is underway to determine the immediate and underlying causes of the collapse. The State Fire Service had deployed three trucks to assist in the rescue mission.
