Nigeria Police Ban Local Security Groups Ahead of Edo Governorship Election

Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has warned political actors in the upcoming Edo state governorship election to adhere to the rules and face the full force of the law if they fail to comply. He also announced a ban on local security groups in Edo state until further notice.

Egbetokun emphasized the importance of a peaceful and credible election, stating that the Nigeria Police is committed to neutrality, professionalism, and respect for human rights. He assured the deployment of 35,000 personnel, complemented by 8,000 from other security agencies, to ensure a smooth conduct of the election.

The IGP also warned potential troublemakers to abandon plans to disrupt the electoral process, emphasizing that any act to undermine the election will be met with swift and decisive action. He directed all local security apparatus to refrain from interfering with election security functions and announced restrictions on movements and VIP escorts on election day.

Earlier, INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu expressed satisfaction with the commission’s preparedness for the election and admonished political parties to eschew political intolerance and violence. He reminded governorship candidates and party chairmen of the importance of signing the Peace Accord on September 12, 2024.
