Brazil Suffers Fourth Defeat in Five Qualifying Games as Argentina Falls to Colombia

Brazil’s struggles in World Cup qualifying continued with a 1-0 loss to Paraguay, their fourth defeat in five games. Meanwhile, Argentina, without Lionel Messi, suffered a 2-1 defeat to Colombia in a rematch of the Copa America final.

Diego Gomez scored the winner for Paraguay after 20 minutes, leaving Brazil fifth in the qualifying table with only three wins from eight games. Vinicius Jr. apologized to fans, acknowledging the team’s difficulties and his own struggles with confidence.

Argentina, despite Nicolas Gonzalez’s equalizer, fell to James Rodriguez’s penalty winner for Colombia. The result leaves Argentina top of the table but only two points ahead of second-placed Colombia.

In other matches, Uruguay drew 0-0 with Venezuela, while Australia was held to a 0-0 draw by Indonesia in Asia’s World Cup qualifiers. Japan thrashed Bahrain 5-0, and South Korea recorded their first win, beating Oman 3-1 with goals from Son Heung-min and Hwang Hee-chan.

The top six teams in the South American qualifying table will automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup, with the seventh-placed team entering an intercontinental play-off.
