Nigeria has taken a significant step towards improving the global ranking of its international passport and enhancing internal security by joining the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Public Key Directory (PKD) and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the announcement in Montreal, Canada, after participating in the Import Ceremony of the Country Signing Certificate Authority (CSCA) alongside the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap.
The move aims to modernize border control systems, reduce waiting times at airports, and increase efficiency in travel documentation verification. Minister Tunji-Ojo emphasized the government’s efforts to enhance the travel experience for Nigerians and international visitors, stating that the era of endless waits and manual verification is over.
The PKD/PKI system enables the sharing of authentic travel documents among member states, facilitating inter-agency collaboration and playing a critical role in national security, tourism, and economic growth. The Nigeria Immigration Service has begun training staff to understand the new technology, ensuring a smooth implementation process.
This development is expected to have a positive impact on Nigeria’s global ranking, ease of doing business, and tourism ecosystem, while ensuring enhanced security in compliance with international standards.
