Nigeria: Inclusive Polls Key to Stronger Democracy, Expert Says

A leadership expert, Otive Igbuzor, has emphasized that the participation of people with disabilities is crucial to strengthening democracy at the local level in Nigeria. Mr. Igbuzor made this assertion at a round table discussion on disability-inclusive local government elections in Abuja, attended by various disability groups and champions.

In his keynote presentation, Mr. Igbuzor stressed that polling units must be equipped with ramps, handrails, and appropriate signage to ensure full inclusion of people with disabilities.

He also advocated for the training of electoral officials on handling people with disabilities during elections. Furthermore, he urged the implementation of the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act at the local government level.

The event, organized by TAF Africa, aimed to empower people with disabilities to participate fully in local government elections.

The CEO of TAF Africa, Jake Epelle emphasized the importance of inclusive democracy, stating, “Everyone, regardless of ability, should have a voice and a vote.”

The discussion focused on identifying solutions to ensure people with disabilities can exercise their electoral rights, with partners and advocates pledging their commitment to inclusion and equal participation.
