ECOWAS Parliament Holds Delocalized Meeting in Guinea

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament has convened a delocalized meeting in Conakry, Guinea, focusing on promoting healthcare services and education in West Africa.

Theme: “Promoting Healthcare Services and Education in West Africa: The Role of ECOWAS Parliament”

The meeting, held from September 3-7, 2024, aims to raise awareness among MPs on healthcare services and education, enabling them to contribute to health policy promotion in ECOWAS member states.

Address by Co-Chair Orlando Dias Pereira

Hon. Pereira emphasized the importance of regional integration and cooperation, quoting Kofi Annan: “The only path that offers any hope of a better future for all humanity is that of cooperation and partnership.”

Parliamentary Involvement in Health Policy

Hon. Pereira stressed the need for parliamentarians to be involved in health policy-making, ensuring ownership and commitment at all levels of the process.

Objectives and Outcomes

The meeting aims to:

  • Obtain details on ECOWAS Commission interventions in the region
  • Gather information on health policies and successful interventions
  • Draw lessons from successful programs for implementation in member states

A Site Visits and Report

The Joint Committee will visit health and education facilities and present a report at the forthcoming Ordinary Session of Parliament, with recommendations to be transmitted to stakeholders.
