Super Eagles vs Bafana Bafana: Nigerians in South Africa Urged to Be Cautious

The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has advised Nigerians residing in the country to be mindful of their words before and during the upcoming semi-final clash between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana. Additionally, they should carefully choose where they watch the match in public spaces.

This advisory comes in response to “potentially inflammatory online comments made by some South Africans” related to the AFCON 2023 semi-final in Ivory Coast.

The statement notes that these comments often contain veiled threats, referring to Nigerians “cooking jollof rice” before the match and facing retaliation if Bafana Bafana loses.

The High Commission urges Nigerians to maintain their known good conduct, and to report any instances of provocation to the authorities.

A Fierce Rivalry Heats Up

Wednesday’s match holds immense significance for both nations, with the winner securing a spot in the AFCON final.

Historically, the Super Eagles boast a dominant record against South Africa, claiming 7 victories to their 2 in their 14 head-to-head encounters. The remaining 5 matches ended in draws.

This upcoming clash echoes the 2000 semi-final that saw the Super Eagles overcome the 1996 champions 2-0 in Lagos.

The stakes have never been higher as Nigeria chases their fourth title, while South Africa looks ahead to what has been an elusive second.
