INEC Chairman, Chief of Air Staff Collaborate to Ensure Seamless Elections

Abuja, Nigeria – In a bid to ensure the successful conduct of upcoming bye-elections and re-run elections in 26 states across Nigeria, the Chairman of Nigeria’s Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, on Monday paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Headquarters.

During the visit, Professor Mahmood Yakubu commended the NAF for their cooperation in providing election security and logistic support in previous elections, highlighting the neutrality and professionalism displayed by NAF personnel.

With the upcoming elections, Professor Mahmood Yakubu emphasized the need for collaboration between INEC and NAF. Recognizing that INEC cannot carry out such a massive national assignment alone, he sought the support of NAF in the expeditious delivery of election materials to three locations in the North East, South East, and South West geopolitical zones of the country. He specified the tonnage of materials to be airlifted and assured that the evacuation of materials from focal airports to the states where elections will be held would be handled by INEC and the Central Bank of Nigeria, as per standard practice.

In response, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar expressed his delight at the visit and commended INEC for its invaluable contributions to Nigeria’s democracy. He highlighted the efforts made by INEC under the leadership of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, including continuous voter registration, the introduction of new technologies, and post-election reviews. Air Marshal Abubakar also acknowledged the significance of the Electoral Act of 2022 in enhancing transparency and credibility in the electoral process.

Air Marshal Abubakar assured Professor Mahmood Yakubu of NAF’s unwavering commitment to supporting INEC in providing security and rapid airlift for the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive electoral materials across the country. He mentioned that although some NAF aircraft were undergoing maintenance, alternative aircraft would be utilized to transport materials. However, he stressed the importance of early delivery due to the aircraft’s capacity.

Both leaders expressed their gratitude to each other for the visit and highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration between INEC and NAF. They emphasized the need for robust security and well-coordinated logistics to ensure the success of the upcoming elections.

The visit served as a platform for greater cooperation and synergy between the two organizations, with the shared goal of upholding good governance, stability, and the rule of law throughout Nigeria.
