Nigeria Seeks Increased Investment in ICT R&D from Nokia

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called on Nokia Networks to increase its investments in Research and Development (R&D) in Nigeria to support the growth of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the country.

The EVC/CEO of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, made the request during a recent meeting with a delegation from Nokia Networks of Finland. He emphasized the importance of R&D in driving innovation and economic growth, and encouraged Nokia to play a more active role in this area.

“We are keen on getting the youths employed, as our Ministry is targeting three million youths for skills acquisition,” Maida said. “We are keen on harnessing Nokia’s capabilities through technology transfer to support Nigerian youths in technical skills.”

The NCC also expressed its commitment to promoting local content development in the ICT sector. Maida urged Nokia and other Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to explore R&D opportunities to deepen local content development in Nigeria.

In response, Nokia representatives expressed their continued commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital economy agenda. They noted that Nokia already has an R&D centre in Nigeria and said they would target greater investment in this regard.

The meeting between the NCC and Nokia Networks represents a positive step towards strengthening cooperation between Nigeria and Finland in the ICT sector. Both parties have expressed their willingness to work together to promote innovation and digital transformation in Nigeria.
