Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has criticized the treatment of Nigerian footballer Victor Osimhen by his club Napoli.
In a statement on Friday, Ambassador Tuggar emphasized that Nigerian sportspeople in the diaspora must be treated with dignity. His comments came after a video circulated online mocking Osimhen for missing a penalty kick in a recent match against Bologna.
The Minister stated that the incident falls under the Ministry’s 4Ds Strategy, which prioritizes democracy, development, diaspora, and demography. He stressed that all Nigerians in the diaspora should be respected and treated with dignity in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The government and embassy will continue to monitor the treatment of Nigerian sportspeople around the world and seek redress for any mistreatment.
