A Nigerian court has sacked the governor of Kano state, Yusuf Abba, and declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Nasir Gawuna, the winner of the March 18 governorship poll.
The Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal on Wednesday withdrew the Certificate of Return presented to Yusuf by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
INEC had declared Yusuf the winner of the election after he polled 1,019,602 votes to defeat Gawuna, who scored 890,705 votes.
However, the tribunal ruled that Gawuna won the election after overturning Yusuf’s victory.
The tribunal’s decision is a major blow to Yusuf and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
It is however a victory for the APC, which has now regained control of one of Nigeria’s most populous states.
The tribunal’s ruling is subject to appeal, but it is likely to have a significant impact on the political landscape in Kano state.
