Nigerian minister concerned over deaths in landslide, kidnaps

The Minister of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed grave concern over the reported deaths of about 30 people in a landslide caused by illegal mining activities in the Kuje Area Council of the capital territory.

The landslide occurred on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, and buried several miners who were working in the area.

Minister Wike also expressed alarm over the reported kidnapping of 19 people on Thursday, September 7, 2023, in the Bwari Area Council of the FCT by alleged bandits.

The minister, who spoke at a maiden meeting with the six Area Councils Chairmen in Abuja, said he would summon the FCT Director of State Services as well as the Commissioner of Police to receive adequate briefings on the kidnapping and facilitate rescue operations.

He also asked the council Chairmen to set up surveillance taskforces in their areas to monitor mining activities in the local communities.

The minister’s concerns come as Nigeria grapples with a growing number of incidents of illegal mining and kidnapping.
