Nigerian court rules that capital city does not have special status in presidential elections

A court in Nigeria has ruled that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) does not hold a higher status than other states in the country when it comes to presidential elections.

The ruling by the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal was made on Wednesday in Abuja, the capital city.

The tribunal was hearing a case filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, challenging the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Tinubu.

One of the grounds for the PDP’s petition was that Tinubu did not win the required 25% of the votes cast in two-thirds of the 36 states and the FCT.
