Nigerian media, INEC meet to review 2023 general election

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Media executives, correspondents and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) met in Abuja on Wednesday to review the 2023 general election.

The meeting was chaired by INEC Chairman Professor. Mahmood Yakubu.

In his opening remarks, Professor Yakubu said that the meeting was part of the commission’s ongoing review of the election. He said that the commission was interested in hearing the media’s observations and suggestions on how to improve future elections.

The NUJ President Chris Isiguzo said that the NUJ was committed to working with INEC to ensure that future elections are free, fair, and credible. He said that the media would continue to play its role as the watchdog of the electoral process.

The parties discussed a range of issues, including the accreditation of media organizations and personnel, coverage of the election by mainstream, social, and online media, public enlightenment and voter education, and access to media, reportage, hate speech, and fake news.

The meeting concluded with a commitment from both sides to continue working together to improve the electoral process in Nigeria.
