The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has said that the commission did not receive any direct funding or cash support from international development partners for the 2023 general election.
Professor Yakubu made the statement at a meeting with civil society organisations (CSOs) on Monday, 24 July 2023. He said that the commission’s policy is to not receive direct funding from sources other than the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The INEC boss said that the commission received support from civil society organisations and implementing partners working on elections, but that this support was totally indirect. He said that the feedback and recommendations from these organisations have been very helpful to the electoral process.
According to him, the 2023 general election was the first time that all sensitive and non-sensitive materials were printed in Nigeria.
The commission also expanded voter access to polling units and introduced many technology-based innovations.
Professor Yakubu said that the commission is currently reviewing the 2023 general election and that it will share its plans for the upcoming bye-elections and preparations for the off-cycle governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi states.
