EALA seeks ECOWAS support for Tanzania’s Auckson for IPU presidency

The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) has called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) parliament to support the candidacy of Tanzania’s Tunia Auckson for the presidency of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

EALA Speaker Ntakirutimana Joseph made this call during a courtesy visit on ECOWAS Parliament Speaker Sidie Mohamed Tunis in Abuja on Thursday. Mr. Joseph said no African has ever led the IPU, which is the global organization of national parliaments. Hr then added that it is important for Africa to come together to support Auckson, who is the speaker of the Tanzanian parliament.

Mr. Tunis promised that ECOWAS would support Auckson’s ambition.

He also said that the visit also discussed ways to strengthen both ECOWAS and EALA.

The IPU presidency is a non-renewable two-year term.

The election will be held in September 2023.
