Nigeria suspends domestic airline Max Air over safety concerns

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has suspended the operations of Max Air, a domestic airline, over safety concerns.

The suspension comes after a number of incidents involving Max Air aircraft in recent months, including a runway excursion in May and a bird strike in June.

In a letter to Max Air, the NCAA said the suspension was necessary “to ensure the safety of passengers and crew.”

Nigeria’s aviation industry is one of the fastest-growing in Africa. However, the industry has also been plagued by safety concerns.

The letter said the suspension would remain in place until Max Air had addressed the safety concerns identified by the NCAA.

Max Air is the latest in a series of airlines to be suspended by the NCAA in recent years. In 2019, the NCAA suspended Arik Air and Aero Contractors over safety concerns.

Nigeria’s aviation safety record has been poor in recent years. In 2012, a Dana Air plane crashed in Lagos, killing all 153 people on board.

The NCAA has said that it is committed to improving the safety of Nigeria’s aviation industry. However, the recent suspension of Max Air suggests that there is still work to be done.
