100 feared dead in Nigerian boat mishap

About a hundred wedding guests are feared in the north central Nigerian state of Kwara on Monday.

It is not yet clear what exactly caused the accident but there are speculations that it was caused by overcrowding. Rescue efforts are underway.

The accident occurred in a village called Egbu, in the Patigi Local Government Area of the state.

Reports say that the boat travelling along the Niger River was carrying wedding guests who were returning on Monday morning to Kwara State from a ceremony in nearby Niger State.

The state Governor on Tuesday commiserated with families of the victims and members of the community where the incident occurred.

He expressed deep sadness over the unfortunate incident.

Abduction by armed gangs on roads have forced many to travel nearby locations by boat.

Overcrowding and poor maintenance is responsible for most boat accidents on Nigerian waterways.
